What are Memberships?
Memberships in Forento allow you to offer products through a subscription model rather than a one-time purchase. Instead of charging a fixed price per product, you can give customers access to a variety of materials by charging a recurring monthly or yearly fee. This feature is perfect for creators who want to build a collection of content and offer ongoing value to their audience.
Why Offer Memberships?
Offering memberships is an effective way to boost your sales and generate consistent, recurring revenue. Rather than relying on one-time purchases, a membership model encourages long-term engagement from customers. This setup works particularly well for creators who:
Have a library of content to offer over time.
Want to keep customers returning for fresh, new material.
Are focused on building an active community around their brand and content.
Memberships can also lower the entry barrier for potential customers. A subscription fee feels like a smaller commitment compared to a larger upfront purchase, making it easier to convert new leads into loyal customers.
What Types of Products Can Be Included?
With Forento, you can offer a wide range of products in your memberships:
🎓 Courses: Ideal for those with a full catalog of lessons and chapters.
📥 Downloadables Share e-books, guides, or other downloadable content.
🎥 Videos: Deliver exclusive video content, such as tutorials or expert interviews.
📅 Events: Host live or recorded events that only members can access.
Whether you want to offer a mix of all formats or focus on one, memberships allow you to create a unique experience tailored to your audience. Sessions, cannot be included in Membership tiers. See 🛒 Products on Forento to learn more about product types.
Pro tip: If you have a large collection of products and resources, consider creating multiple membership tiers at different price points. Offering tiered pricing can help attract a wider range of customers, allowing those who aren’t ready for a full premium subscription to start at a lower commitment level. This approach can increase conversions and encourage upgrades over time.
How to Create a Membership Tier
To create a Membership, first, go to https://app.forento.io/membership and click "Create new tier". Once you've done this, you'll be able to enter details for your Membership tier.
The options for a tier are Name, Short description, Description, Thumbnail, Community Privileges, Included products, and Pricing. Fields such as Name and Pricing are required, whereas the Thumbnail and Long description are optional. Below, you'll see a step-by-step tutorial on how to create a Membership tier.
Name
A title for your Membership Tier. Usually less than five words.
Short Description
In this section, you'll summarize the key value of your membership tier in just one or two sentences. Keep it concise and impactful, ideally between 20-50 characters.
Pro tip: If you offer multiple membership tiers, try to maintain consistent lengths for both the short descriptions and titles. This helps create a clean and organized interface for your users.
Description
The description field allows you to provide more detailed information than the Name or Short Description. Here, you have the flexibility to fully customize your text by adding bullet point lists, bold, italicized text, and other formatting options. You can use this section to elaborate on the key features, benefits, or content available in this membership tier.
Thumbnail
This is the image that will represent your membership tier. Choose a visually appealing thumbnail that aligns with your brand and clearly reflects the value or theme of the membership.
Community Privileges
Set the level of access members in this tier will have to the community section of your platform. Choose from the following options:
None: Members will not be able to view or interact with the community.
Read-only: Members can create a community profile and view all posts and comments, but cannot engage or interact.
React to posts: Members can activate their profile, view the community, and like/react to posts.
React to posts and comment: Members can view, react, and add comments to existing posts within the community.
React to posts, comment, and post: Members will have full access to the community, including the ability to create their own posts, comment, and react.
Included Products
In this section, you can select which of your published products will be included in the membership tier. All products that have been published with a price will appear here, and you can choose from any on-demand product types. You can also manage product inclusion from the Price & Availability settings of each specific product.
You can make changes to your membership tier (such as adding or removing products) even after publishing your Membership tier.
Pro tip: If any of your products aren’t showing up in the list, double-check that they’ve been published with the correct pricing and availability settings.
Pricing
In this section, you’ll need to choose at least one of the following pricing options for your membership tier:
Offer monthly plan: Charge customers on a monthly basis for access to the membership content.
Offer annual plan: Charge customers once per year for access.
For each option, you’ll be required to set a price. It’s common to offer an incentive for users to choose the annual plan by applying a discount—typically by giving the equivalent of 1-2 months free. This encourages users to commit to a longer-term membership, providing you with more predictable revenue.
If both the monthly and annual plans are enabled, users will be able to select between the two when they subscribe.
Pro tip: Make sure your pricing strategy aligns with the value offered and appeals to your target audience. Testing different price points can help you find what works best.
